United States Association of Collegiate Fencing Clubs

April 1st, 2006

Dear USACFC Participants, Coaches, and Friends;

As President and a co-founder of the USACFC, it gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to Clemson University, site of the 2006 United States Association of Collegiate Fencing Club Championships.

Four years ago, no one thought an event like this was possible. It would fail in its first attempt people would say. After all, club teams are NOT serious programs with dedicated athletes. Four years later, twenty nine men’s teams and twenty three women’s teams totaling 500 plus athletes will compete in what will be the fourth year for the event. Medals will be awarded in all individual and team events plus three weapon and combined weapon titles.

The 2006 Championships welcomes seven new teams; Bowling Green State University (OH), North Carolina State University, the College of William and Mary (men), James Madison (men), Arizona State University, Tufts University (men), and Georgia Tech making 2006 the most challenging to date.

The championships move to the southwest in 2007 when the University of Texas at Austin plays host. Texas will most likely see the greatest increase in new members with the addition of teams from the Southwest Intercollegiate Fencing Conference and Intercollegiate Fencing Conferences of Southern California and Northern California; University of Houston, Baylor, University of North Texas, Texas Tech, Texas State, Southern Methodist, UCLA, Southern California, California at Berkeley, Cal Poly, and UC Irvine making the total number of schools that have participated in one championship or more at fifty.

The USACFC Championships will return to New England in 2008 at Smith College. The University of Wisconsin in Madison will follow in 2009, and in 2010 the second quadrennial will end at Virginia Tech.

Once again, the largest gathering of collegiate fencers will take place in what should be another weekend of great competition for all athletes. On behalf of the organization and its officers, I wish all competitors, coaches, officials, spectators, family, and friends an enjoyable experience.

Sincerely,

Bruce M. Capin
President, USACFC
